A Rant and an Ode

Earlier this year I was chatting with a woman about Sex and the City. We were giddily extolling the virtues of the show and how much we enjoyed it when a male joined our conversation. Upon hearing us, he in essence started to huff and puff and denigrate the show.

“That’s a horrible show. All it does is promote meaningless, uncommitted and rampant sex. It shows nothing about the type of commitment required between a man and a woman to make a quality relationship work. It adds no value to the global landscape.”

Apparently, he had an opinion.

Trying to give him a fair shake and hear him out…since his ability to do that was absent…we tried to give examples of how it did add value and help empower many women to openly and honestly discuss sex, something we believed was an important turning point for women in this day and age. He continued to disagree and then went off about how the show just didn’t value relationships. The more I reflect on his comment, even now, I remain convinced that he was not the target market of the show and honestly had no business watching it.

This series was ALL about relationships…it just happened to be that the important relationships celebrated in the show were not those between men and women…but the ones between the main characters of the show….the women. His behavior led me to believe that, first, he had no clue nor ever will about how amazing female friendships give us strength, give us joy, give us laughter, give us compassion, give us empathy and even give us mojo. Secondly, it led me to believe that he is a fucken bastard for implying that the only important relationships requiring attention are those between men and women and for as much as he claims to be introspective and poetic and sensitive so every woman should want him…that he is actually a fucken idiot for not being able to see past silly sex stories to recognize the significance of female friends.

Apparently, I have an opinion.

Why the rant? It’s obvious, isn’t it?
This is an ode to my girlfriends. I am so grateful for being able to share these Field and Stream experiences with you. Because even through all the self-imposed drama and the insecurities and uncertainties that come with this journey…it all becomes pretty inconsequential when you are at my side. And it is not limited to this effort of finding an enjoyable male/female relationship but for all the other things that are important to us…because to the man who I will not name in this blog but will reveal to anyone who asks in person…there ARE a multitude of things important to us outside of finding a man. Jackass.

Thank you to my girlfriends. For each other, we will continue to remind ourselves who we truly are as defined by us and how we will never need to make any apologies for that. And hell…we’ll continue to have a riotous blast while doing it.
