Top 10 Downtown Portland Hotel Holiday Lobbies

One of my favorite things about Christmas is the holiday decorations and lights. When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was drive through Downtown Seattle to see the Christmas tree, the big Bon Marche/Macy’s star in Westlake, and all of the lights strung up on the trees on 5th Avenue. It was always and still is a magical time of year that I love. Fortunately, Downtown Portland also has festive decorations for the holiday season. Since we’ve been together, D and I have made it a point to walk around Downtown every year to enjoy all of the lights and decorations and then finish our evening…

    Birthday Freebies in Portland

D often likes to say, “You can’t spell Cheap without Chan.” While I always give him the side-eye when he says it, I’d have to admit, I do love me a happy hour, a coupon, and a sale. So, when it came to my birthday, I started to gather information about all the birthday freebies available around town and how I could fill my day collecting on all of these offers. Through my research findings, it was clear that the old adage “there are no free lunches” is mostly true. Many of the “free offers” are only available if you sign up for a loyalty/rewards club or email list. There…

    Spark Pet Botjoy

While Marie Kondo pretty much has the phrase “Spark Joy” locked down as her brand statement, the act of sparking joy can come from other things as much as folding your clothes into compact little packets. Botjoy is one of these things. Created by Portland artist, Gary Hirsch, Botjoy is an art-forward movement to spark hope, courage, inspiration, AND joy into this world. He’s done so by painting small robots onto the the backs of dominos, then leaving them in the streets for random strangers to find. He’s expanded the effort by inviting others to steal his idea, which has led to the creation of Brave Bots for children in…

Snowpocalypse Kale and Sausage Instant Pot Soup

Last week in Portland, Oregon, the weather forecast threatened us with an epic snowstorm. We had already seen how friends and family to the north of us, in Seattle, had already been hit hard with inches of snow and ice and missed school days. So, we could only expect the same…or at least prepare for that likelihood. So, Portlanders went shopping and apparently felt what they needed to survive in case they became stuck at home was bunches of hearty, leafy green kale. This was at least the narrative when this picture of an empty table at a grocery store was featured online. I tend to believe that the real…

I Suffer From FOMO: The Instant Pot Diaries

I was minding my own business, already satisfied with my Prime Day purchases. An Alexa Echo was on its way. I had also just brought home a KitchenAid Stand Mixer in classic red earlier than planned (the plan was to get a new house first). So, the last thing I needed was another cooking device. But since I have an insufferable case of FOMO (fear of missing out) and an insatiable desire to purchase small kitchen appliances, when I saw friends talking about this thing called an “Instant Pot,” I couldn’t redirect my attention until I learned more. That path led me to reviews and blog articles about how people…
